Summer Skin Care: Tips, Tricks & More!

The key to youthful, vibrant and healthy skin? Preventative care.

While we strongly encourage our clientele to provide their skin with proper care and protection 365 days a year, it’s especially important during the warmer summer months. This is due to environmental factors such as sun exposure and high temperatures.

From the cottage to the beach and everywhere in between, here are the best tips, tricks and information to help you care for your skin this summer!

The Importance of Summer Skin Care

Before we take a closer look at how to care for your skin from May until September, let’s first begin with why it is so important.

Sun Exposure

Exposing your skin to the sun can be very beneficial. Of course, in moderation and with the right precautions. Not only can it leave you with a healthy glow, but it can also help to provide you with important nutrients such as Vitamin D.

Unfortunately, too much exposure to the sun or exposure without proper protections in place, can damage your skin, leaving it burnt, dehydrated or even with the risk of developing skin cancer.

Not only does your risk of developing skin cancer increase, but too much exposure to the sun may lead to aging, wrinkles and the loss of elasticity.

High Temperature

With the summer season comes higher temperatures. The warmer your environment is, the more likely you are to perspire. This is a natural reaction that helps to cool your body. As you continue to sweat, your body loses water that is essential to your overall health, including your skin.

As your body becomes dehydrated, so does your skin. To help ensure that your skin remains healthy on the inside and looking great on the outside, proper hydration and skin care is key!

Summer Indulgences

From family gatherings and BBQs, to weddings, events and more, it’s hard to deny that many indulgences are at your fingertips in the summertime. While many foods can be great in moderation, it’s important to consider that some of these options may not be great for the health and appearance of your skin.

For instance, having an abundance of ice cream, french fries or other sweet/salty treats may result in a break-out. With the right balance and care, you can indulge in your favourite summer treats, while also enjoying skin that is clean, clear and glowing!

How to Care for Your Skin in the Summer

1. Professional Facials

Your skin can benefit from a professional facial in many ways. From cleansing and revitalizing congested skin, to providing nutrients and hydration, a facial can leave you with a lasting healthy glow. Especially in the summertime!

With Bare Ur Beauty, we encourage our clients to begin their journey with a consultation. A consultation can help to ensure that we properly assess their skin, discuss long-term goals and explore all of the solutions available.

This can help to not only help set realistic expectations, but also create a strategic and personalized approach to help you feel confident in your skin.

Once we have a clear idea of your expectations and a plan for success, we can select the right facial or facials to keep your skin hydrated, healthy and happy all summer long!

2. Vitamins

The addition of quality vitamins and supplements can support a whole-body approach to better health. What many don’t know, is that it can also help to keep your skin healthy and happy - especially in the summertime!

We recommend the following vitamins to support the health and appearance of your skin:

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids

  • Vitamin A

  • Vitamin C

  • Vitamin E

  • Zinc

The vitamins you take to support your skin may depend on certain factors, such as your overall health. Speak with a healthcare professional before introducing a new vitamin into your lifestyle to help ensure your best health.

3. Sunscreen

The regular use of a quality sunscreen prior to sun exposure can help to protect your skin. Not only can the right sunscreen can help to protect your skin from burns, but it can also help to reduce your risk of skin cancer.

In fact, the regular use of sunscreen can also help to reduce the signs of aging, limit the appearance of sunspots and avoid broken blood vessels.

When spending time outdoors, it’s recommended that you apply sunscreen every two hours. Especially if you are swimming or sweating!

4. Hydration

Did you know that the human body is composed of about 60% water?

From aiding in digestion and regulating your blood pressure, to lubricating your joints, carrying nutrients throughout your body and protecting both organs and tissues, hydration is key to your overall health.

Staying hydrated is also essential to the health and appearance of your skin. It can help to prevent wrinkles, boost your complexion, reduce and prevent acne, promote healing, and aid in anti-aging efforts.

The question remains, how much water should you drink per day? While this amount can vary from person to person, drinking 2-3 litres of water per day is a great place to start.

5. Diet

Your diet can have a significant impact on your skin. Especially in the summer months, when many of us are tempted to opt for sugary treats, salty snacks and junk food.

Here are some of the best foods to promote the health and appearance of your skin:

  • Salmon

  • Watermelon

  • Sweet potatoes

  • Broccoli

  • Green tea

  • Tomatoes

  • Avocados

  • Carrots

  • Walnuts

  • Olive oil

With the right plan and approach, you can incorporate skin-boosting foods into your diet all summer long.

6. Moisturize

Never underestimate the importance of moisturizing your skin.

Moisturizing your skin is especially important during the summer months, as exposure to sun and heat can dehydrate your skin. As your skin becomes dehydrated, it may secrete more oil than usual, which can lead to impurities.

The moisturizer that you select can depend on the unique needs of your skin. While some may opt for an all-in-one product that can be used morning, noon and night, others may invest in multiple products to better suit their needs. In fact, some facial moisturizers double as a sunscreen, to provide your skin with further protection from the sun!

7. Limit Sun Exposure

While it may be tempting to soak up the sun during the summer months, too much sun can be damaging to your skin. By limiting your sun exposure, you can reduce your risk of sunburn and dehydration through prevention.

We generally recommend spending time outside in the early morning and late afternoon, as the sun is most harsh between the hours of 11:00 am and 2:00 pm.
